Housekeeping staff are in some ways the most visible employees in a hotel — guests see them in corridors, in rooms, at the linen trolleys. Yet housekeeping uniforms are o!en the most neglected part of a hotel’s uniform program. This is a mistake, and I’d like to explain why.
Why Housekeeping Uniforms Matter More Than You Think
Think about this from a guest’s perspective. They’re walking down the corridor to their room and they pass someone in a worn-looking, ill-fitting uniform. Compare that to someone in a neat, wellfitting, hotel-branded tunic. Both are doing the same job — but the impression is completely different. Guests make judgements about a hotel’s standard of service based on how the staff look, even when those judgements happen subconsciously.
Styles of Housekeeping Uniforms
Tunic and Trouser Set
By far the most popular option for Indian hotels. A well-designed tunic (usually knee-length or just above) with matching trousers. Practical, professional, and easy to move in. Works for both male and female housekeeping staff.
Frock/Dress Style
Traditional western hotel style — a knee-length dress, sometimes with apron over it. Still used in some 5-star properties for a classic look. Less practical for heavy-duty housekeeping work.
Polo Shirt and Trouser
Increasingly popular in business hotels and budget hotel chains. Simpler, cheaper, and perfectly serviceable. Less luxurious-looking but very practical.
Fabric Considerations
Housekeeping is physically demanding work. Sta” are bending, reaching, pushing trolleys, carrying linens. The uniform needs to allow full movement and be highly durable. Poly-cotton (65/35) is the standard choice — durable, easy to launder, and looks presentable. For 5-star properties, a higher quality twill or linen-blend fabric gives a more premium appearance.
Color is also important. Medium shades — burgundy, navy, forest green, chocolate brown — are practical for housekeeping because they hide minor stains better than white or very light colors. Many Indian hotels choose their brand color, which also reinforces brand identity.
Hotel Logo and Branding on Housekeeping Uniforms
Every hotel should have their logo embroidered on housekeeping uniforms. Le! chest is standard placement. For larger chains, the hotel name and location is sometimes added too. This reinforces brand identity and also makes it very obvious that the person entering a guest’s room is hotel staff — an important security consideration.
Aprons for Housekeeping
Many hotels provide an apron for housekeeping sta” to wear when cleaning. A practical apron with pockets for carrying keys, room cards, and cleaning supplies is really useful. Waist aprons are the most common. The apron can be a di”erent color from the main uniform — contrasting nicely while also protecting it from cleaning product splashes.
Ordering Housekeeping Uniforms for Your Hotel
When ordering, the key details are:
- Number of sta” (male and female separately)
- Individual sizes or measurements
- Color choice (aligned with hotel brand if possible)
- Logo artwork for embroidery
- Whether you need aprons, caps, or other accessories
- Fabric preference
For a 50-room hotel, you might have 8-12 housekeeping sta”. That’s a small order in uniform industry terms — but you should still be able to get custom branded uniforms made. We don’t require any minimum quantity, so even very small hotel properties can order properly branded uniforms.
